Multi-species Foraging on a Marburg Virus Bat Reservoir
I was a research assistant and photographer with the Kyambura Lion Monitoring Project in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda. The project monitors lions, leopards and spotted hyenas with vehicles and camera traps, and is trying to build a science-based programme that protects those carnivores and supports the people living around the parks.
A camera survey in Maramagambo Forest took us around Python Cave, where Egyptian fruit bats roost. Going through that footage, we found more than fourteen species at the cave, including leopards, eagles, monkeys, and monitor lizards, hunting or scavenging those bats, a known Marburg reservoir. This paper is a write-up of those findings and its potential implications.
